Throughout history water has confronted humanity with some of its greatest challenges. Water is a source of life and a natural resource that sustains our environments and supports livelihoods but it is also a source of risk and vulnerability. In the early 21st Century, prospects for human development are threatened by a deepening global water crisis. Debunking the myth that the crisis is the result of scarcity, this report argues poverty, power and inequality are at the heart of the problem.
In a world of unprecedented wealth, almost 2 million children die each year for want of a glass of clean water and adequate sanitation. Millions of women and young girls are forced to spend hours collecting and carrying water, restricting their opportunities and their choices. And water-borne infectious diseases are holding back poverty reduction and economic growth in some of the worlds poorest countries.
Beyond the household, competition for water as a productive resource is intensifying. Symptoms of that competition include the collapse of water-based ecological systems, declining river flows and large-scale groundwater depletion. Conflicts over water are intensifying within countries, with the rural poor losing out. The potential for tensions between countries is also growing, though there are large potential human development gains from increased cooperation.

An ambitious outcome in Paris will accelerate opportunities for climate change action in developing countries and be an important pillar in the post-2015 era of sustainable development. As people around the globe today commemorate World Environment Day, which focuses this year on the plight of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and their particular vulnerability to the effects of climate change, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is renewing its call for a fresh approach to environmental protection, one which recognizes the intricate and deep connection between protecting the environment and human development.
In its latest report released in April, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimated the cost of "ambitious" climate change mitigation would reduce economic growth by 0.06 percent annually. However, the underlying estimates do not take into account the economic benefits of reduced climate change.
Against this backdrop, UNDP is working to move away from a climate change discourse focused on trade-offs between economic growth, poverty and environment, to one that looks at how to advance these three strands of sustainable development together.

A thought-provoking Kapuscinski Development lecture co-organised by the European Commission (EC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the University of Cyprus (UCY) took place on Wednesday 14 October 2015 at UCY. The renowned philosopher, neuroscientist, geostrategist and author, Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan developed the topic of “Ethical and Security Implications of Emerging Technologies”.
What is more important than political freedom is human dignity, so how we shield it and how can we regulate innovation, in order to protect our very own existence, the Professor wondered. You cannot be dignified without political freedom, but you can also have political freedom with severe inequality, disenfranchisement and lack of dignity. Technology in itself is neither good nor bad, we cannot ignore the potential for misuse. So a revolutionary technology can be a bless for humanity, but it can also destroy it. If left unregulated, such technology could literally destroy humanity, Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan said.
Imagine the dangers of being able in the near future to enhance mental dexterity and control emotionality. According to Professor Nayef Al-Rodhan since emotions are physical, cellular, and subcellular neurochemical events, this could become a reality. So what needs to be done? According to Mr Al-Rodhan massive exercise of political will and good governance are vital ingredients for protecting humanity.
The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Constantinos Christofides, Mr Michael Stylianou, Representative of the European Commission and Mr Mehmet Erdogan, Representative of the UNDP welcomed the first Kapuscinski Development lecture at the University of Cyprus. Ms Androulla Kaminara, Head of Task Force: Knowledge, Performance and Results – Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development, presented the goal of the European Year of Development and the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development, while Professor Andreas Pitsillides, President of the Department of Computers Sciences presented the speaker.
